The Flaw of AI

AI is all over the news. What catastrophe awaits the human race if someone “in the know” doesn’t get a grip on AI.

Not gonna lie, I use AI too. It makes a lot of things easier and faster. Want to update your resume? No problem. Need to troubleshoot a snafu on Canva? No problem. Want a list of low-ingredient, easy-to-prepare crock pot meals without having to comb magazines and websites? No problem.

In one way, AI can be such a great tool that helps us accomplish complicated tasks rather quickly and efficiently.

But here’s the thing. AI is sanitizing how we present ourselves to the world. It sounds great….but does it?

I’m a podcaster and receive a lot of AI-generated guest requests. I’ve learned I cannot trust the smooth, diplomatic, covering-all-the-bases request to match the personality of the guest. It’s like being catfished.

We seem to be craving authenticity. Not only with copy but also with video clips. I’m so tired of seeing “perfect” “people” (AI-generated) putting on their perfect makeup, wearing their perfect clothes, living in the perfect house, and on and on (starting to gag a little…).

We are all struggling with one thing or another. When I’m sitting at my desk with my head in my hands wondering what in the world I’ve gotten myself into and where is the escape hatch – I don’t want to talk to someone who has it all together (they’re delusional or lying, btw….no one has it all together).

I want to talk to someone who has been through the muck (and may still be in it). Someone who admits to tripping up stage steps on way to being a keynote speaker (shout out to Jess Ekstrom) or going through an entire interview with a smear of spaghetti sauce on her face.

Those are the REAL people – the ones we can relate to and think maybe there is hope for the rest of us as we bumble our way through life.

So if you’re a bumbler, like me (as I sit here trying to figure out what to say next since I’m resolutely NOT using AI), take heart. You’re not alone and I, for one, absolutely appreciate you and all your flaws.

Our flaws connect us to one another, not perfection (again….not a thing).

I’m not listing any helpful suggestions today other than to say, “I’m glad you’re in the world. Keep being authentic, making mistakes, and leaving sanitized perfectionism to AI.”
